Ann Ciciani’s Iconography collection is an exploration of archetypes of popular culture and how they relate to our modern day ‘myths’, that is films, stories and toys. Ann uses 3D casts made from resin to create a landscape of sculpture on board. ’We make toys, write stories and watch films in order to better understand ourselves. The archetypes in popular culture are an evolution of the cave drawings and myths of ancient people. Just as they used to do, in contemporary society we are still creating these reflections of our culture in order to better see and understand ourselves and the culture we are living in’.
Each figure acts as a symbol that will resonate with each viewer in a completely personal way. On a broader scale, each symbol represents an archetype that must be experienced and integrated. Once integrated the individual can transcend the archetype and move to a higher level of consciousness by moving through the Door of Perception (ref. Aldous Huxley), featured in the centre of the work. In this way, the collective consciousness mirrors itself, becomes more self aware and in doing so continues to evolve.

‘If an Egg is Broken By an Outside Force, Life ends. If broken by an Inside Force, Life Begins. Great Things always begin from the Inside’
The Cosmic Egg is one of the most prominent symbols in world mythology. It represents the origin of the universe. It can be found in Egyptian, Babylonian, Finnish, Dogon, Polynesian,Vedic, Zoroastrianism, Phoenician, Chinese (Taoism) and many other creation stories. In almost all cases, this embryonic motif emerges out of darkness, floating upon the waters of chaos. Within this egg typically resides a divine being who literally creates himself from nothing. This creator then goes on to form the material universe. Based on the premise, as above so below, as within so without, within each of us lies the eternal cosmic egg of creation. Within this holographic model of the universe, each of our minds are a fractal of the universal mind embodying itself as a speck of human consciousness. Each fractal of consciousness provides a unique perspective of reality personal to the viewer. From this unique perspective each of us, just by being conscious, we are each actively creating our own personal reality that we experience everyday. All it takes is the tiniest variation in our daily routine to create a completely new reality that has a ripple effect throughout all of creation itself.
As a civilisation, we are just in the process of awakening to this fact- we are not victims of reality but co-creators of reality. As a species we are as yet still largely unconscious of how truly powerful we are. In truth we are co-creators of our own reality, capable of creating an infinite variety of manifestations in our lives from second to second.
On this board, I have presented 56 cosmic eggs, each completely unique in form and colour. I could make an infinite number of these boards and no two eggs would ever be exactly the same. Here I am trying to communicate symbolically through the power of this piece of art the infinite powers of creation that lie within us all.

Metanoia is the pivotal work of Ann Ciciani's Iconography collection. The Iconography collection is an exploration of archetypes and symbolism in popular culture and how it relates to the evolution of our collective consciousness. Metanoia, a transliteration of the Greek μετάνοια, means after-thought or beyond-thought, with meta meaning "after" or "beyond". This word encapsulates the power of imagery to communicate ideas that fall outside the realm of language and logical thought processes - a fundamental function of art itself. On another level 'Metanoia' can also mean 'conversion' or to change one's mind or world view. On a collective level, it represents the evolution of the collective consciousness through mirroring of ourselves through popular culture, thus contributing to the evolution of our collective mind or psyche. This also encapsulates the idea of art functioning to elevate the consciousness of both the artist creating the work and the audience receiving it.

'Let The Children Boogie' is part of the Commentary Collection. This is a statement that is supposed to be fun and light but also has the underlying message about the need to take a look at our how current ways of teaching and parenting can sometimes be harmful to the development of a young mind. Our current education systems are not addressing these bright new minds that are being born into our society. We are seeing more and more cases of hyper-sensitivity (HSP), autism and ADHD etc. These should not be seen as disabilities but new genetic improvements that are contributing to the evolution of the human race. Hyper sensitive children (HSPs) are that way because they are actually processing more information around them (their reducing valve ref Aldous Huxley has widened). This is not a disability but a new strain of evolution that will lead the collective to a higher state of collective consciousness. Less extreme forms of autism should actually be viewed as a unique form of intelligence that can offer a new perspective to many unsolved problems. ADHD and HSP children are actually processing more information and much faster than neuro-typical children. Therefore the current system is not suitable for them. So it should not be about medicating or excluding these children or forcing them into the current education system, which is now obsolete and actually harming a lot of these children, but rather asking ourselves- how can we improve our education system and ways of parenting to let them flourish. This of course in line with the overall of cracking the cultural balloon (Crack in the Cosmic Egg) and pushing beyond the current cultural status quo.

Bearbrick is a brand of collectibledesigner toys designed and produced by the Japanese company MediCom Toy Incorporated. The name is derived from the fact that the figure is a cartoon-style representation of a bear and that it is a variation of MediCom's Kubrick design. "Kubrick" was chosen in honour of director Stanley Kubrick. In further homage to the film-maker, the Kubrick logo is designed in the style of the logo created for his movie A Clockwork Orange. The figure is an anthropomorphized bear with an extremely simplified form and a pot belly. Bearbricks have now become a highly coveted and collectible art toy with various famous designers such as including Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood and Ivana Helsinki to mention a few, creating their own signature version. As a symbol of popular culture, this object caught my attention as an interesting overlap between the world of toys and art. In particular due to the fact that two cultural symbols that represent polar opposite emotions e.g. the softness and innocence of childhood represented by the teddy bear versus the hardness and impersonal nature of the robotic body. It resonated with me as a symbol that embraces the Zeitgeist we are currently experiencing. In a climate of fear and paranoia, will the tenderness of the innocence of childhood (represented by the teddy bear) be reconciled with the harshness of today’s society dominated by technological ideals and the consequent rise of AI? Does this figure represent the loss of our childlike innocence as a species as despite knowing the dangers, we allow for the uncontrolled growth of AI technology? Whether the balance between these two archetypes will be restored remains to be seen…

'The Door' represents the door to higher levels of consciousness. (Ref: Aldous Huxleys’ book ‘The Doors of Perception'). Looking through the door outward (e.g. through our own perspective) - we see life only from our individual point of view- therefore our perception of reality is highly subjective to the individual. Looking through the door inward (e.g. introspection, meditation etc) we expand our consciousness to a higher level beyond our own e.g. ie the universal collective consciousness ref. Carl Jung and we can perceive a higher level of reality. The key to opening the door is wisdom and right action (represented by the keys) but for each person this is different. Our task in life is to unlock this higher level of consciousness dormant within us all by finding the right key of wisdom personal to us (like the missing piece of our own jigsaw puzzle). When we find this key we can unlock the door. Along our journey we are given signs and synchronicities by our guides- be they synchronicities, animals or from the angelic realms. I think of butterflies and bees and dragonflies as guides. The serpent is the final obstacle to getting through the door. It represent our shadow self. This is the side of ourselves that the consciousness represses because we don’t want to face the darkness within ourselves. But if we can face this final challenge and defeat the serpent (our shadow) nirvana or heaven or cosmic consciousness is finally ours. This is the journey we all must face. It is the hero’s journey.

The erotic drive that is the driving force behind evolution (psychic evolution- the evolution of our consciousness) leads us to find enlightenment through our struggles. In this composition the subconscious mind is represented by the moth on each corner (the butterfly of the night- our subconscious is most active when we are sleeping). Dragonflies, bees, butterflies are guides leading us to knowledge (represented by the flowers and fruit) and ultimately to enlightenment (the lotus flower in the centre). The key on the lotus flower in the centre represents wisdom. Higher integrated knowledge leads to increased levels if consciousness. As our consciousness increases and we awaken- we start to see syynchronicities and signs and begin to listen to our guides (represented by the bees, butterflies and dragonflies). If we follow these signs and begin to become more attuned to our inner voice these guides will eventually lead to an awakening or enlightenment- represented by the lotus flower in the centre. The key on the lotus flower represents the wisdom needed to unlock the door to nirvana/heaven or cosmic consciousness. The small butterfly is the victor (about pure intentions not ego- therefore the butterfly is small). This is part of The Crack in the Cosmic Egg Collection because it is about ‘Cracking the Egg of our Cultural Balloon’ finding new ways of seeing the world and therefore challenging the cultural status quo and breaking new boundaries and allowing the collective culture to evolve. Art is a fundamental tool crucial to this purpose. My art uses symbology as a way to activate the subconscious mind of the viewer.

As part of Ann Ciciani’s evolving ‘Crack in the Cosmic Egg Collection’, her most recent work ‘Savage’ is a statement about the attitude we need to survive in the aggressive and violent times we are living in. The word also encapsulates the current Zeitgeist of the collective consciousness by acknowledging the popularity of this word in current popular culture in music and colloquial language. It references the fearful and aggressive attitude present in contemporary society today. However, by juxta-positioning aggressive imagery e.g. guns and devil faces with love motifs like angel wings, hearts, doves and XOX and LOL messages, Savage is about the power of love to fight the darkest forces. The message here is about fighting savage behaviour with love. It is a call to recapture the power of the divine feminine (Mama’s a Savage) and find the ‘Warrior of love’ within us all.
